Indigenous Cattle and Murrah Buffalo Conservation Scheme in Haryana: Genetic ImprovementScheme StatusScheme Status

This scheme is designed to promote the conservation and development of indigenous cattle and the Murrah buffalo breed in Haryana. The long-term objectives are to conserve valuable indigenous germplasm and enhance milk production and overall productivity. Over a medium-term horizon (5 years), the scheme aims to identify top-quality indigenous cows and Murrah buffaloes, improve their genetics through artificial insemination with high-quality semen, and encourage farmers to rear high-yielding animals of genetic merit.

Scheme Description

  • Murrah Buffaloes:
Buffaloes meeting a benchmark of 18 kg daily peak milk yield are identified with ear tags, along with their progeny. Incentives are provided to the owners based on the lactation yield:

    • 18–22 kg: ₹15,000

    • 22–25 kg: ₹20,000

    • Above 25 kg: ₹30,000

  • Indigenous Cows:
Different breeds are incentivized based on peak yield:

    • Hariana Cows:

      • 8 to 10 kg: ₹10,000

      • 10 to 12 kg: ₹15,000

      • Above 12 kg: ₹20,000

    • Sahiwal Cows:

      • 10 to 12 kg: ₹10,000

      • 12 to 15 kg: ₹15,000

      • Above 15 kg: ₹20,000

    • Belahi Cows:

      • 5 to 8 kg: ₹5,000

      • 8 to 10 kg: ₹10,000

      • Above 10 kg: ₹15,000

Beneficiaries must not sell the recorded animal or its male progeny for at least one year. Additionally, the animals are required to be bred through artificial insemination by the government. Identified animals are also insured, with partial premium support provided if an operational Livestock Insurance Scheme exists.
