The awards are conferred in four main categories:
- Vigyan Ratna (VR):
For lifetime achievement and contributions in any field of science and technology. - Vigyan Shri (VS):
For recognizing distinguished contributions in any field of science and technology. - Vigyan Yuva – Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar (VY-SSB):
For encouraging young scientists who have made exceptional contributions. - Vigyan Team (VT):
For teams (three or more members) that have collectively made outstanding contributions in research or innovation.

Ceremony Details
- Announcement:
The awards are announced on National Technology Day (11th May) every year. - Award Ceremony:
The awards are conferred on National Space Day (23rd August) by the Hon’ble President or Vice President of India, typically held at Vigyan Bhavan or an alternative venue. - Commencement:
The awards will commence from the year 2024.

- A Sanad (certificate) signed by the President of India.

- A commemorative brochure featuring the awardee’s citation and photograph.
- In the case of a posthumous award, the decoration is received by the next of kin.

If an awardee is unable to attend the ceremony due to personal reasons (excluding posthumous cases), the award is deemed to have been conferred on them, but no one else may receive it on their behalf.
