The Prime Minister’s Special Scholarship Scheme (PMSSS), launched in 2011, is a scholarship initiative by the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) for students who are domiciled in the Union Territories of Jammu & Kashmir (J&K) and Ladakh. This scheme provides financial support to students who have passed Class 12th or equivalent examinations and secured admission to government colleges and other select institutions outside the UTs of J&K and Ladakh, except in medical courses. The aim is to help students from these regions access quality higher education in various fields.
Benefits
The PMSSS offers financial assistance in the following forms:
Note: Maintenance allowance is released in equal amounts of ten throughout the year.
Disbursement of Scholarship
- Academic Fee: Paid directly to the educational institution as per the claim or as per the rate fixed by the respective fee regulatory authority.
- Maintenance Allowance: Paid via Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) into the student’s bank account. First-year payments are released in 9 installments.
Duration of Scholarships
The scholarships are renewable every year, subject to:
- Good conduct
- Maintenance of prescribed attendance at the institution
- Failure to get promoted to the next level may result in scholarship forfeiture after two failures in a row.
Eligibility
To be eligible for the PMSSS, the applicant must meet the following criteria:
- Domicile: The applicant should be a domicile of the Union Territories of J&K and Ladakh.
- Academic Qualifications: The applicant must have passed the Class 12th examination from JKBOSE or CBSE-affiliated schools located in J&K and Ladakh.
- Income: The family income should not exceed ₹8,00,000 per annum.
- Lateral Entry Scheme: Students who wish to apply under the Lateral Entry Scheme must have completed a Diploma in Engineering from polytechnic institutes recognized by the Directorate of Technical Education (DTE), J&K, and Ladakh.
Exclusions
The following categories of candidates are not eligible under this scheme:
- Candidates pursuing courses through Open Universities.
- Students availing benefits of any other scholarship scheme.
- Candidates admitted through Management Quota.
- Students pursuing diploma courses.
- Candidates pursuing postgraduate studies.
- Students with a family income exceeding ₹8,00,000 per annum.
- Students failing to register online on the AICTE portal.
