Launched in May 2016 by the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas (MOPNG), Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana 2.0 is a flagship scheme aimed at providing free LPG connections to women from below-poverty-line households. The objective is to replace traditional, polluting cooking fuels—such as firewood, coal, and cow-dung cakes—with clean cooking fuel (LPG), thereby improving health outcomes for rural women and reducing environmental pollution. The scheme successfully expanded LPG coverage from 62% in May 2016 to 99.8% in April 2021, with the target of reaching 8 Crore connections by March 2020. An additional allocation of 1.6 Crore connections (Ujjwala 2.0) also caters to migrant households.
