The RMEWF scheme was initiated by the Ministry of Defence in order to provide the non-pensioner Ex-Servicemen (ESM) and their widows with medical care treatment and funds for this purpose. This scheme is especially designed for ESMs who do not enjoy any regular sources of income for health-related expenses, particularly during old age, when expenses regarding such treatment are quite high.
The scheme also extends medical cover for serious illnesses through a special treatment scheme. Therefore, these serious illnesses cannot cause medical costs to push these persons into poverty.
